We call this family the “Chesterfields” as that is the name of the shelter that picked up these dogs running at large. The only way they were handled was by a catchstick so they were afraid of leashes and everything else when they arrived.
This family of dogs consisted of the mother, father, two 14 month old sons and two 14 month old daughters. We now have 3 of them.
The story is one of the worst we have dealt with. They were kept in an 8 by 10 kennel their whole life until one day they escaped and were left to fare on their own. Their former owner admitted he never touched them or cared for them except to bring them food. They had never even seen a vet.
Because of their past, they have to overcome their fear of people, sounds and new things. The mama is friendly and always stays near her sons, the boys are coming around slowly, but we see progress every day.
The father, Romeo, had gunshot wounds that have been in place for years. He will be having his leg amputated soon. Our associate Dane rescue has him. If you would like more info on Romeo log on to: www.scdanerescue.homestead.com
The 2 girls were running free by themselves and one has now been brought into the shelter and one has still to be caught. Ourselves and our associate Dane rescue are seeing that they make it to a rescue as soon as possible.
On August 12, 2006 a very frightened 4 year old female and her 14 month old son were transported to us. They hid under the car until we coaxed them out. We named the mama Gracie as she is full of grace.
The 14 month old boy was too weak to stand and eat. He was petrified of what was going to happen to him. Both dogs had generalized demodectic mange, ticks, fleas and worms.
We loved watching Gracie eat a wholesome dinner on her first night.
Unfortunately she had to be spayed even though she was pregnant
because of a bad infection throughout her body.
Then on August 26th we received the other son of Gracie. You can see the horror in his eyes as he tried to hide under the dashboard of the transport car. Vinnie, as he is called by us, is slowly learning that people are not all bad.
UPDATE!
Gracie and Dylan accept treats from Dave, co-founder of GDRSC. Vinnie is in the corner, he wants to take a treat but he is still too afraid of us.
Dylan is looking much better and gaining weight.
Gracie loves to go and try out everybody’s bed to see which she likes the best!
Unfortunate Update
On January 18, 2007 we lost Vinnie who was the greatest inspiration to all of us at Great Dane Rescue of S.C. Vinnie was the epitome of why we do rescue and will forever be missed and loved. We are thankful for every moment we were
privileged to have with this courageous boy.
The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.
